Why do grades matter?
The problem with root cause analysis is that no matter how many "why's" you answer, it will always end up that it was you who had done something wrong. That's what I've learned and realized today.
Not that it matters a lot but it can affect a person a lot more than you can expect.
Getting depressed over a quiz is something normal that a college student who has the same field as mine would naturally feel. Grades are everything in college. They decide what your rank is and how people look at you. Well, that's how life is... Even in normal circumstances we look at those who are on the top most highly without recognizing the people who had set the standard for us to label them as "on the top" (I hope you get what I mean - we wont be able to address people as 'on the top' if there are no people 'at the bottom', it is the same as experiencing happiness, we can't describe the feeling of happiness if weren't able to experience pain, right?)
College has this normal - not so obvious discrimination which i wont explain any further because not all schools are like that.
Every now and then I would stop and wonder why grades are everything. I know I'm not being practical. Grades are obviously the equivalent of money in real life. It's just that thinking about it makes me, a bit... Sad.
We live in a country full of corrupted people, and even the school which is by all means the ground for good beginnings is also corrupted. Cheating, to be able to graduate on time is one thing. It's not the problem of the school if their student didn't gain any knowledge; it's not their loss anyway. The problem was that how could a student do something so wrong even if he/she is aware of it. Was it because he/she was so desperate to pass? She's pressured by peers or even by the family? Or no matter what method of studying he/she does nothing really works on his/her way?
We learn how to do both good and bad things in school without even knowing it. Now ask yourself, did you grow up the way you were supposed to be?
To all the parents who gets mad upon knowing that their child failed:
I understand your concern, I am aware how expensive it is to have a child study in a university but please, before you felt the desire to get mad over your child's grades he/she was mad at his/herself first. They do not need anymore mocking, questioning or any other forms of losing-hope-thoughts, they need a parent who will comfort them.
And to all the students who once failed and feels like he/she's going to fail again:
I know how you feel. Please continue to have a positive outlook in life. If you decide to be negative, then quit now (whatever your course is) nothing good will happen to those who are too pessimistic.
Always remember that:
- Cakes taste better when you were the one who baked it.
- Achieving something feels great especially when you experienced failure.
- You appreciate things better when you are aware of their importance.
