Harry Potter: Read it or Watch it?
I'll get straight to the point. I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter, but I did love it. It's just that I'm not a "Harry Potter" girl. (I'm more of a Percy Jackson one)
Personally, I would recommend to read the book first rather than watching it.
The book contains very detailed narration of the story (as it is a book - it's the original work) and the adventures from very complicated ones to the very silly arguments are explained and can easily be understood here, because you can read and re-read it.
The movies were good and, it's also easy to understand but if you're looking for "more" adventure then I think the book is the better choice. Movies are limited as they have certain events that they choose to show the audience in a very limited time the movie runs that's why missing slight turns that won't affect the story as a whole are excluded and very long and tedious events are shortened too; if you read the book first then you might feel the disappointment of not having seen some of these happenings but the benefit of reading it first is that you'll get to easily understand the plot of the movie; to be honest as to how I remember and seen the movies, the only one with almost the same content as the book was the first one, the one with the sorcerer's stone (I wasn't able to watch Deathly Hallows so I don't know how close it was to the book but as to how I remembered it as the movie numbers progress their similarities to the book become less; but who knows right?) the other movies are good, however it felt like the content was lacking and no matter how grandeur the setting and the making was (in the movies; although the setting was also described by the author in the book) I can't just simply watch it and get disappointed when a certain scene that I like didn't appear or was expressed in the movie in a different manner. I kept asking myself things like "when will this happen", "wasn't he suppose to appear here", "I don't remember this happening", "it's different from what I know" and from then on I realized... If you want to watch the movie then read the book first but if you want to watch the movie first then decide for yourself if you still want to read the book.
I'm not criticizing as to how they made the movie, in fact I liked everything about it except that it always lacks something in the plot, things that are very important and would make the viewers understand the current situation. I think most of the movie-tie-ins these days always lack either the "adventure" part or the "essentials of the plot" part; and those two are very important.
Watching the movie first may also give you a visualization aid while reading the book after so it's all good! :)
